This counters the weakness of a grit guard which cannot as effectively prevent dirt in wash water swirling up back on to the wash mitt. In contrast, the grit guard which is placed above the dirt trap is used to wipe the dirt off the mitt and under the guard by utilizing its abrasive surface and ~200 individual segments. This negates the weakness of the dirt trap which has a smooth surface and is not as effective in wiping dirt off the mitt.
